The Young Nats propose the
Implementation of a tax-free income bracket
Better reward for work.
ISSUE
We believe young people should keep more of what they earn. Under the Labour Government, living costs are skyrocketing year on year. House prices are through the roof. The financial stress on young people, particularly tertiary students, is significant.
PROPOSAL
The Young Nats propose the implementation of a tax-free income bracket prior the current 10.5% tax bracket. Although we are not proposing what the value of tax-free income should be, the idea is that the first, for example, $0 - $5000 of an individual’s earnings would incur no tax. The tax-free bracket would apply to all earners, not just young people.
IMPACT
A tax-free income bracket would provide increased after-tax income for all New Zealanders, and will assist individuals with rising costs of living while providing an across-the-board reward for work.
A tax-free income bracket would be particularly beneficial to low income earners, such as young professionals just starting out in their careers, as well as tertiary and high school students. For the average person working 20 hours a week on the current minimum wage, this policy would save them $525 over the course of the year.
Similar policies have been successfully implemented in Australia and the United Kingdom.
This particular policy could be successfully implemented as a complimentary policy alongside National's recently announced inflation-adjusted tax rate policy (see full proposal document for more detail).

The Young Nats support the
Re-implementation of 90 Day Trials for all New Zealand employers
Providing employment opportunities for young people.
ISSUE
It is well known that employers face a disincentive to hire young people due to their lack of experience and skills over other candidates. This results in young people being overlooked for employment opportunities.
The 90 Day Trial Period policy introduced by the former National government was an effective mechanism in giving employers confidence to employ less experienced workers. However this policy has been significantly weakened by the current Labour-led government, and can now only be utilised by employers with less than 20 employees. As such, there are reduced employment opportunities for young people.
PROPOSAL
The Young Nats propose the re-implementation of 90 Day Trials for all Kiwi employers in order to increase employment opportunities for young people.
IMPACT
90 Day Trials have been shown to increase youth employment by giving businesses the confidence to hire unskilled or less experienced individuals.
In a previous survey, 80 per cent of Kiwi employers responding stated they had used 90 Day Trial Periods in the last year before their disestablishment, with 33 per cent of employers reporting that they gave someone a chance in a job that they otherwise wouldn’t have thanks to a 90 Day Trial Period. Further, 90 per cent of employers who used a 90 Day Trial Period kept employees on after the period finished.
90 Day Trial Periods are a good thing for young people wanting to get into the workforce. Ensuring that they are available to more employers will help to provide greater employment opportunities for young people.
